Post-Gazette Pavilion, Burgettstown, PA sorry, Mike has not yet written about this show... add your own comments if you were also there!

The Mavericks, Rodney Crowell

Tulagi, Boulder, CO.....   This was a showcase performance for a radio convention.

Blues Traveler, Bob Schneider, Franky Perez

Fox Theater, Boulder, CO.....     This was a showcase performance for a radio convention.

Sheryl Crow, Joe Firstman

Red Rocks Amphitheater, Morrison, CO.... I had seen Crow (and Firstman) eight days earlier in Pittsburgh . Same setlist but much more jaw-dropping setting.     Sheryl Crow setlist: Steve McQueen There Goes the Neighborhood My Favorite Mistake Members Only The First Cut Is the Deepest Leaving Las Vegas Strong Enough Redemption Day Sweet Rosalyn If It Makes You Happy A Change Would Do You Good Home Picture All I Wanna Do Soak Up the Sun Everyday Is a Winding Road I Shall Believe (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding encore break  Safe and Sound Rock and Roll

Hem, EastMountainSouth

Image
Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO..... A lunchtime showcase performance for a radio convention.  Hem was still working their Rabbit Songs album that came out a year earlier. Eastmountainsouth was just getting launched as a band. Sadly the duo would only last one album before breaking up.

Shelby Lynne

Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO..... This was a promotional appearance for a radio convention, taping an interview with a performance that was promoting her album Identity Crisis which was due out a month later.

Indigenous, Los Lonely Boys

Image
Tulagi, Boulder, CO..... This was my first time seeing Los Lonely Boys and not only was their music really enjoyable but they had a great finale to their set by doing all of the guitar tricks (playing behind the back, playing with teeth, multiple people playing different parts on the same guitar at once). They made a great impression on me so I would see them when they played Pittsburgh a month later . Indigenous was good as well. Tulagi was a bar right next to the Fox Theater, and for these radio convention showcase performances, conference attendees could go back and forth between venue to see the artists performing at each with staggered set times. Here's who was at the Fox this night .

Ziggy Marley, Guster, Steadman

Image
Fox Theater, Boulder, CO.....   Ziggy Marley was on the road promoting his debut solo album Dragonfly , and it my only time catching him live. Guster's latest album, Keep It Together , was fantastic, and though I had been playing their music on the radio since 1997's Goldfly , this was my first time catching them live. My strongest memory of the show was drummer Brian Rosenworcel bleeding on the drums playing without drum sticks. Steadman didn't make much of an impression. There was a bar right next to the Fox Theater called Tulagi, and for these radio convention showcase performances, conference attendees could go back and forth between venue to see the artists performing at each with staggered set times. Here's who was playing at Tulagi this night .

The Thrills

Image
Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO..... The Irish band made some damn fine music in the twenty-aughts and it's a shame that it didn't have more of an impact stateside.   This was a showcase performance for a radio convention.

Robinella & The CC String Band, Dar Williams

Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO.....   A lunchtime showcase performance for a radio convention.

Alexi Murdoch

Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO.....   This was a late night showcase performance for a radio convention, which technically happened on 8/9.

Leona Naess, Damien Rice

Tulagi, Boulder, CO..... Tulagi was a bar right next to the Fox Theater, and for these radio convention showcase performances, conference attendees could go back and forth between venue to see the artists performing at each with staggered set times. (Here's who was playing at the Fox .) Damien Rice was intense as per his usual. My primary memory of the set was watching backup singer Lisa Hannigan fold herself up at the back of the stage when she wasn't singing on a song. She sat down with her legs folded underneath her and folded her hands together in a very memorable manner. Even though Rice's O album was released the previous year, he was still trying to break through to a higher level in the U.S. While the eventually went gold on these shores, I think it took until the following year to make it to a broader audience.   I loved Naess' Comatised album from 2000, but I was a little underwhelmed by her latest and self-titled album. But it was good to see her nonetheles...

Nickel Creek, Jonny Lang, Howie Day

Image
Fox Theater, Boulder, CO..... This was a showcase performance for a radio convention. I think Nickel Creek was still trying to break through with their 2002 album This Side .  It was cool to see Jonny Lang playing the blues. Howie Day didn't leave much of an impression.    There was a bar right next to the Fox Theater called Tulagi, and for these radio convention showcase performances, conference attendees could go back and forth between venue to see the artists performing at each with staggered set times. Here's was at Tulagi this night .

Pete Francis

Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO..... This was a showcase performance for a radio convention. I don't recall much about the set.

Jesse Harris & The Ferdinandos, Rachael Yamagata

Image
Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO..... This was a showcase performance for a radio convention. I had seen Jesse a bunch in the summer of '03, at another radio conference as well as at the WYEP Summer Music Festival . He was on the road, working it in support of his album The Secret Sun . My primary recollection of Rachael Yamagata was her wearing gloves while performing. I think she also popped in during the late-night Robert Randolph set to watch his performance.

Robert Randolph

Image
Millennium Harvest House Hotel, Boulder, CO.....   The performance was a late night set (technically 12:30 AM on 8/8) for a radio convention. People were crammed tightly into a small room to see Randolph playing solo do his amazing pedal steel thing.

North Mississippi Allstars, Ben Kweller, Graham Colton Band

Fox Theater, Boulder, CO.....     sorry, I haven't yet written about this show... add your own comments if you were also there!

Sheryl Crow, Joe Firstman

Image
Heinz Hall, Pittsburgh, PA.... The show was close to sold out. I didn't arrive early enough to see first opener Greta Gaines, who was not listed as a performer. Crow played piano for the encore. An enjoyable performance, loaded with crowd-pleasers. I would see the same performance again a week later but in the remarkable environment of Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado . I went to dinner with someone from Atlantic Records prior to the show (Firstman was signed to Atlantic). His music struck me as being Counting Crows-esque.
