Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band

PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ.... The All-Starr Band included Ian Hunter, Roger Hodgson (of Supertramp), Greg Lake (of King Crimson and Emerson, Lake & Palmer), Sheila E, and Howard Jones. It was amazing to see Ringo for the first time (although not the last!), but perhaps the highlight of the show was seeing Greg Lake sing "Karn Evil 9" with him on bass, Sheila E on drums, and Howard Jones on keyboards. Killer!   Setlist : Photograph Act Naturally The Court of the Crimson King (led by Greg Lake) The Logical Song (led by Roger Hodgson) No One Is to Blame (led by Howard Jones) Cleveland Rocks (led by Ian Hunter) A Love Bizarre (led by Sheila E.) Red Hot Chili Peppers/Stone Temple Pilots/Fishbone

PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ I was supposed to go backstage and meet the guys in STP after their set was over. That would have meant missing part of the RHCP performance, but I didn't mind, having just seen them at the same venue a few week before . However, the meet & greet never happened. When STP came out for their performance, singer Scott Weiland mentioned to the audience that someone from their record company, Atlantic Records, had just embarrassed them in front of their friends, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It seemed like a pretty harsh way of calling out someone. For the meet & greet, I had been told by a rep from the label to go to a certain location in the amphitheater as soon as STP had completed their performance. When I did, though, the rep told me in a very agitated tone of voice that the meetup was cancelled. I found out later that the label rep had told the guys in STP rather loudly backstage that the bill should be reversed and that RHCP should be openin...

Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters

PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ..... The Red Hot Chili Peppers have always between an intertwining theme throughout my radio career. The band emerged right as I began in college radio, in 1984. They headlined the very first concert I ever MC'ed. They made the transition from underground to way-above-ground rockstars right around when I started at my first full-time radio gig in 1991. And their 1999 "return to form" album, Californication, was released as I was making the transition from being just a DJ to actually running a radio station. So the announcement that the Chili Peppers were going to be playing two shows in the summer of 2000 at the PNC Bank Arts Center, about one month apart and with a different major opening act for each (the Foos and Stone Temple Pilots ), was a very welcome one. At the time, WHTG was in the process of being sold and that at some point, probably in the fall, we were all going to lose our jobs. So during that summer, I did my best to do wh...

Tori Amos, Josh Clayton-Felt

Garden State Arts Center/PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ.... I wrote a contemporaneous review of this concert for injersey.com. Here it is. Sometimes seeing a concert is better in the intimate setting of a nightclub or other smaller room. However, sometimes larger venues--while still not ideal--can contribute small touches which can make a show more fascinating to watch. Seeing Tori Amos perform at the Arts Center held several such unintentional touches--like the fireflies which occasionally buzzed in from the wooded areas which surround the amphitheater, blinking on and off like nature's contribution to Tori's light show. The show was also full of intentional details which distinguished it from previous New Jersey performances--to date, Tori had only played indoor halls, like the Count Basie Theater (Red Bank) and the State Theater (New Brunswick). The Arts Center, with its soaring ceiling, expansive stage, and combination seating (the actual seats plus the lawn area), was a...

Jackson Browne, Shawn Colvin

PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel, NJ...... I wrote about this show for injersey.com when I was a music and movie writer for them. Here's my review. Jackson Brown made a triumphant and nostalgic return to New Jersey with a show at the PNC Bank Arts Center. And Browne's fans were out in force to see the man responsible for beloved '70s hits like "Doctor My Eyes" and "Running On Empty." Despite rain earlier in the day, even the lawn area was thick with concertgoers. You have to give a guy like Browne a lot of credit. Even though most of the audience was coming for his classics, Browne wasn't about to turn his show into a greatest-hits parade. He put out a new album earlier this year, Looking East , which combines the personal committment and mellow charm of his '70s output with a high-tech, '90s feel (the CD of Looking East is available with flashy enhancements of interactive text, words, and pictures for your computer). And yet, Browne is no cran...
