Jobi Riccio, Buffalo Rose

Image
The Oaks Theater, Pittsburgh, PA..... It was the final installment of WYEP's Neighborhood Concert Series. A really great show. Nashville's Riccio impressed with versions of her tracks like "Sweet," "For Me It's You," "Whiplash," and her terrific new single "Wildfire Season." She was performing in a trio configuration, backed by drums and bass, and while she started the show with three songs on acoustic guitar, Jobi swapped that out for an electric for the rest of her performance. She played some new songs from a forthcoming album, and mentioned that her bass player has performed on her new material but was newly on the road with her.  Buffalo Rose put in an energetic set to start the night, inspiring a handful of people from the crowd to get up and dance in front of the stage. In addition to their own songs, they did their sultry cover of "Short Skirt/Long Jacket" from Cake.   Jobi Riccio and her band Jobi Riccio shredding a...

Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA... The 21st annual WYEP Summer Music Festival. Everyone on the bill was terrific, and Low Cut Connie perhaps had the most memorable set of the day. But a great day all around.       Also performing were the high school bands Kaelber, Colorblind Coding, and Luke B. Wood.

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Marcus King Band, The Buckle Downs

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA ...   Great performances from Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears, Marcus King Band, and The Buckle Downs. High energy, great guitar skills, and a lot of fun. It was a great night for an outdoor concert and perhaps the largest crowd we'd ever had for a WYEP Summer Music Festival to that point. The plaza was simply packed for most of the day and there was a much larger-than-usual amount of standees at the front of the stage. And the music matched the crowd size.  Songs performed by Black Joe Lewis included "Sugarfoot," "Come to My Party," "I'm Broke," "The Hipster," and "Skulldiggin."    Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears   Marcus King Band   Also performing were the high school bands Tupelo & Jeremy, The Fortunates, and Night Frog.

The Apache Relay, Son Little

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA..... The Nashville group The Apache Relay took the late-summer stage under the big tent at Schenley Plaza as part of WYEP's Final Fridays concert series. The band started their set with a cover of Springsteen's "State Trooper." They also played their signature song "Katie Queen of Tennessee" and for their encore did a cover of Tom Petty's "American Girl." An enjoyable set! Son Little was also good, featuring songs like "Lay Down," "Your Love Will Blow Me Away When My Heart Aches," and "The River."

Martin Sexton, The Lone Bellow, Kopecky, Brightside

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA   It was the 18th WYEP's Summer Music Festival. The Lone Bellow's Zach Williams had a surreal experience performing this show. He mentioned during their set that his great-uncle was one of the workers who helped construct the 42-story Cathedral of Learning, the iconic gothic building that looms behind the audience at Schenley Plaza. However, his great-uncle fell to his death while working there. While he didn't know his great-uncle, it must have been strange performing practically in the shadow of the site of one's relative's untimely demise.  Despite that darker connection, the band put on a great show. So did Martin Sexton, although he didn't invite me to participate in a non-denominational pre-show prayer, as he did the last time I had seen him .    The Lone Bellow

Winterpills

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA..... Part of WYEP's Final Fridays concert series. The Northampton, Massechusetts indie rock band Winterpills (or as a preview of this show in the local newspaper called them, a "chamber pop band") released their self-titled debut album in 2005 and I loved it. What a great sound.  And then I did a double-take looking at the album credits. The female singer in the group was Flora Reed, who was also a publicist at Signature Sounds Records, the Winterpills' record label. I received email on the regular from Flora promoting artists on the label especially when they had live shows in the Pittsburgh area. That was pretty cool. The band came by WYEP for our grand opening festivities of our Community Broadcast Center in early February 2006, and then we booked them a few albums later to do a late summer concert with us. They did a great job.   Also, that same month, I was putting together a Beatles presentation that I did at the Carnegie Science C...
