Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ Here's an external review from the web: New Jersey's resident retro-psychedelic-metal-troglodyte-hot-rodding space-cadets Monster Magnet put in an impressive live set last weekend at this "home town" show. Visuals included rising sun back-drop projections, rapid-fire stills of newsreel war footage, strobe lights, and clouds of dry ice. The boys came out in fine, de-tuned, sludgy form, with frontman Dave Wyndorf repeatedly leaning into the wall of moshers in front of the stage. Ed Mundell put in some fantastic lead-work all night long, with his usual wah-wah drenched sound coming thru 2 full Marshall stacks. (He used a lovely black Les Paul in addition to his usual Strat... Dave also used an SG in addition to his usual battered old Strats.) Joe Calandra's bass-work was great, and was FELT as much as heard. Jon Kleiman drummed brilliantly, & managed to smoke entire cigarettes while drumming, a la Cheap Trick's Ben E. Carlos.... At...

Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ Here's an interview I did right before this Stone Pony concert, originally for injersey.com: Reel Big Fish is not just a band--it's an addiction. Their songs are quite catchy, and their style is hugely entertaining--it sounds like a bunch of guys having a great party, and you can't help wanting to crash it. It's hard not to get involved in the loopy sense of fun. The band plays a ska-punk blend, similar to labelmates Goldfinger. Unlike their friends in Goldfinger, though, Reel Big Fish includes not only the traditional rock instruments of guitar (Aaron Barrett, who's also the lead singer), bass (Matt Wong), and drums (Andrew Gonzales), but also two trumpet players (Scott Klopfenstein and Tavis Werts) and two trombonists (Grant Barry and Dan Regan). In 1995, Reel Big Fish put out a local record, Everything Sucks, in their native Southern California, and were quickly signed to Mojo Records soon after. Their latest effort is Turn the Radio O...

Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ.... The WHTG Snowball.   Here's an interview I did with John Easdale a couple of weeks before this show. Mike: So first, the basics--where are you from originally? John: I grew up in Wayne. Mike: Is that where Dramarama started? John: Yes, everybody in the band was originally from Wayne for the most part--our first couple of drummers were from Wayne, but [later Dramarama drummer and former Blondie drummer] Clem Burke, I guess, is from Union. We were pretty New Jersey based. The four of us who stayed throughout--from the beginning to the end--we all went to the same high school. Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ.... I finally confirmed the date for this show recently. I don't really recall much of Crenshaw's set, but I was very glad to see The Greenberry Woods. Loved their album and they were a good live band as well.
