Mr. Smalls, Millvale, PA.... Marking the 6th time I've seen Jonathan live, it was perhaps the 2nd or maybe 3rd best performance. Here's the set list, as I noted it: 1. No One Was Like Vermeer 2. This Romance Will Be Different For Me 3. O Moon, Queen of the Night On Earth 4. I Was the One She Came For 5. Bohemia 6. Dancing in the Lesbian Bar 7. Old World 8. Because Her Beauty is Raw and Wild 8. Let Her Go into the Darkness 9. Keith Richards 10. Here It Is (Leonard Cohen cover) 11. These Bodies That Came to Cavort 12. We'll Be the Noise, We'll Be the Scandal 13. Sa Voix M'Atisse 14. Her Love Is From Somewhere Else 15. ? 16. When We Refuse to Suffer 17. My Baby Love Love Loves Me 18. My Affected Accent 19. You Must Ask the Heart

Jonathan Richman/Vic Chesnutt

Mr. Smalls, Millvale, PA It was the 4th or 5th time I've seen Jonathan, but it was the first time since 1986 that he wasn't performing solo. Drummer Tommy Larkins ably assisted Jonathan, and it was a nice addition to the show. Jonathan likes to dance around during his set, but when he's the only musician, such hijinx kind of brings the music to a screeching halt. A drummer at least keeps the beat going throughout, allowing Jonathan to dance or play sleigh bells or cowbell without losing any forward momentum for the show. post continues.... Highlights include "Vincent Van Gogh," "Egyptian Reggae," "Let Her Go Into the Darkness," "Springtime in New York," "He Gave Us the Wine to Taste." The very incompatible Vic Chesnutt opened the show. Vic's music is so dark and moody, and Jonathan is so childlike and happy, that the pairing couldn't help but be a train wreck. I was late in arriving, so I missed the beginning of Vic...

Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers

Image
The Haunt, Ithaca, NY..... Such a great concert. Richman was performing as a trio with the Modern Lovers, and that really made this performance head and shoulders over all all of the other times I've seen Jonathan . (I've seen him in a guitar + drums configuration, and you might not think simply adding a bass would really flesh out the sound, but it did.)   Jonathan was touring in support of his latest album It's Time For , which featured one of songs that illustrates some of Jonathan's core principles that are foundational in his music: "Corner Store" (he re-recorded the song four years later for Jonathan Goes Country , but it was originally from  It's Time For ). "I know it costs more money to shop there but this was love, this was love," Jonathan croons on the song's bridge. "I know you had to pay more money, I'll pay money, I'll pay more. I don't care what the mall has got, I want back that corner store." Modernity ...
