Winterpills
Part of WYEP's Final Fridays concert series. The Northampton, Massechusetts indie rock band Winterpills (or as a preview of this show in the local newspaper called them, a "chamber pop band") released their self-titled debut album in 2005 and I loved it. What a great sound.
And then I did a double-take looking at the album credits. The female singer in the group was Flora Reed, who was also a publicist at Signature Sounds Records, the Winterpills' record label. I received email on the regular from Flora promoting artists on the label especially when they had live shows in the Pittsburgh area. That was pretty cool.
The band came by WYEP for our grand opening festivities of our Community Broadcast Center in early February 2006, and then we booked them a few albums later to do a late summer concert with us. They did a great job.
Also, that same month, I was putting together a Beatles presentation that I did at the Carnegie Science Center, so I asked a lot of musicians to give me their fave Beatles moments. Flora shared with me, "I've always obsessed on the intro/outro guitar on 'I Want You (She's So Heavy).' It's a great of example of how a simple repeating chord pattern can build and mesmerize. When John sings 'SHE'S SO' and then the riff comes in and repeats as an extended outro, and the second guitar comes in is such a satisfying musical moment that I don't want to end. Also, Paul's bass lines are amazing throughout."
