Point State Park, Pittsburgh, PA ...   It was part of the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Great weather, and terrific performances. Technically, Lisa Hannigan's earlier set was a separately-billed performance, but I'm counting her as an opening act here.     Lisa Hannigan Prior to the show, Hansard came to WYEP for an interview which I was glad to have conducted.       Glen Hansard setlist (according to this source ): The Storm, It's Coming Maybe Not Tonight Talking With the Wolves Love Don't Leave Me Waiting Philander Low Rising When Your Mind's Made Up Bird of Sorrow Leave In These Arms Astral Weeks High Hope Fitzcarraldo This Gift (encore break) Say It to Me Now Gold O Sleep (with Lisa Hannigan) Falling Slowly (with Lisa Hannigan) Who Knows Where the Time Goes? Winterpills

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA..... Part of WYEP's Final Fridays concert series. The Northampton, Massechusetts indie rock band Winterpills (or as a preview of this show in the local newspaper called them, a "chamber pop band") released their self-titled debut album in 2005 and I loved it. What a great sound.  And then I did a double-take looking at the album credits. The female singer in the group was Flora Reed, who was also a publicist at Signature Sounds Records, the Winterpills' record label. I received email on the regular from Flora promoting artists on the label especially when they had live shows in the Pittsburgh area. That was pretty cool. The band came by WYEP for our grand opening festivities of our Community Broadcast Center in early February 2006, and then we booked them a few albums later to do a late summer concert with us. They did a great job.   Also, that same month, I was putting together a Beatles presentation that I did at the Carnegie Science C...

Dr. Dog, Great Lake Swimmers, Sharon Van Etten, Donora

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA.... It was the 15th annual WYEP Summer Music Festival.    Dr. Dog onstage  Dr. Dog had released their seventh album, Be the Void , a few months earlier, their fourth consecutive release to make the Billboard album chart. They frequently play in Pittsburgh, so it was great to be able to host them for the WYEP Summer Music Festival. (They had visited WYEP for a Live & Direct Session on 3/1/2012, so it was good to welcome them back.)  Great Lake Swimmers had done a Final Fridays show at Schenley Plaza in 2009, so they were returning to trodden ground after the release of their fifth album New Wild Everywhere .  And Sharon Van Etten had also just released her latest album  Tramp  (coincidentally, on the same day as Dr. Dog's latest), which was the first of three straight album's she would get onto the Billboard album chart. See her SMF setlist below. Pittsburgh's own Donora took the opening slot, as the band had ch...
