Dr. Dog, Great Lake Swimmers, Sharon Van Etten, Donora

Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA.... It was the 15th annual WYEP Summer Music Festival.    Dr. Dog onstage  Dr. Dog had released their seventh album, Be the Void , a few months earlier, their fourth consecutive release to make the Billboard album chart. They frequently play in Pittsburgh, so it was great to be able to host them for the WYEP Summer Music Festival. (They had visited WYEP for a Live & Direct Session on 3/1/2012, so it was good to welcome them back.)  Great Lake Swimmers had done a Final Fridays show at Schenley Plaza in 2009, so they were returning to trodden ground after the release of their fifth album New Wild Everywhere .  And Sharon Van Etten had also just released her latest album  Tramp  (coincidentally, on the same day as Dr. Dog's latest), which was the first of three straight album's she would get onto the Billboard album chart. See her SMF setlist below. Pittsburgh's own Donora took the opening slot, as the band had ch...

Fountains of Wayne, Ben Sollee, Chet Vincent & The Big Bend

Image
Bedford Square at Bingham Street, Pittsburgh, PA For WYEP's Rock the Block event, we closed off the street in front of the station building and had musical performances, food, drink, and other fun. This was maybe the 7th or 8th time seeing the band and would turn out to be my last. They were always a fun band to see live. I don't now recall their rider for backstage refreshments, but I'd guess based on past experience that it included Jameson Irish Whiskey.   Fountains of Wayne

Sean Rowe

Image
Schenley Plaza, Pittsburgh, PA.... Sean is a singer/songwriter from the Albany, NY, area with a deep, rumbly voice that needs its own ZIP code. He did a bunch of great songs from his first nationally distributed album, Magic, including "Jonathan." He also did a cover of Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel," Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning," and a Tom Waits song for his encore.      Rowe on stage

U2/Interpol

Image
Heinz Field, Pittsburgh, PA My fifth time seeing U2. It was a very enjoyable show, although if I had to rank them, it might be last. At best, tied for fourth. post continues.... The show started off great, with four songs from Achtung Baby and the concert had a terrific final third. Somewhere in the middle it the set list was a tad soft, although I'm not sure exactly why. The set was interesting to look at at first, but not although that great in enhancing the show (unlike, say, the Zoo TV tour staging). Bono's voice definitely couldn't hit all of the high notes of old, although he pulled off the Pavarotti part in "Miss Sarajevo" quite gracefully. The Avett Brothers, Nicole Atkins

Image
Stage AE, Pittsburgh, PA.... Seth and Scott Avett had visited WYEP that afternoon for an interview and I did the stage announcements at the concert, so it was fun being backstage being treated like a VIP. The Avetts introduced me to their father Jim (who joined the band on "Salvation Song"), and I chatted with my old NJ friend Nicole Atkins (who was a friend of the Avetts during her brief time in NC). It was a great show, of course.   The Avett Brothers   Nicole Atkins   me with Seth & Scott Avett me introducing the Avetts on stage     Avett Brothers setlist: Go to Sleep Tin Man I Killed Sally's Lover Shame The Fall Will You Return?
