The Avett Brothers, Nicole Atkins

Stage AE, Pittsburgh, PA....

Seth and Scott Avett had visited WYEP that afternoon for an interview and I did the stage announcements at the concert, so it was fun being backstage being treated like a VIP. The Avetts introduced me to their father Jim (who joined the band on "Salvation Song"), and I chatted with my old NJ friend Nicole Atkins (who was a friend of the Avetts during her brief time in NC). It was a great show, of course.

Ringo Starr & His All Starr Band

PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA.... This show was originally scheduled for 6/28/2022, then postponed to June 2022, then postponed to this date. It was the longest duration between scheduled date and actual date in my experience, with 1,021 days from ticket purchase to show date. Ringo stills brings the energy. He's 82 as of this show and running around onstage (even doing jumping jacks at one point!). Tons of fun, and Edgar Winter was a revelation. I had never seen him live before, and his contributions were terrific. Tori Amos

State Theater, New Brunswick, NJ.... Before Tori's show (the second time I was seeing her live), my then-wife Christine and I were meeting my WHTG colleague Matt Pinfield, Atlantic Records' Tod Elmore, and a few others for dinner at a restaurant next to the State Theater. The hot topic at dinner was discussion about whether O.J. Simpson might be guilty of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson, which had taken place the previous Sunday. Someone at the dinner table mentioned they had heard on the radio earlier that O.J. was missing. Speculation was interrupted when Matt realized he had to head over to the theater to introduce Tori on stage. Tori and I, after the show Christine and I strolled over to the theater and saw the show, with Tori performing alone with her Bosendorfer on one side of the stage and a harpsichord facing the other direction. Lynyrd Skynyrd

PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA You know, I often wonder whether a band feels cheesy doing this sort of a show, where the concert is a value-added freebie tacked on to a ballgame ticket. If you're Me First & The Gimme Gimmes or The Clarks, probably not. Playing a baseball stadium is a thrill in its own. But if you're in Lynyrd Skynyrd? post continues.... I dunno. But I am sure that the band doesn't usually have a massive fireworks finale to accompany the coda to "Freebird," and the band didn't have to pony up a dime towards the cost of the pyrotechnics. To back up, after the Pirates finished what was only their ninth sellout of the season with a win (what? did he say "a win"???), the players dashed off the field and the stadium crew set up a stage at 2nd base.
