Gnarls Barkley, Spoon, The Raconteurs, Bob Dylan

South Side Works, Pittsburgh, PA.... New American Music Union festival The festival was two days long, featuring a lot more bands than listed above, but due to childcare these four were the only ones I was able to see. Of them Gnarls Barkley and Spoon were terrific. The Raconteurs and Bob Dylan not so much. Gnarls Barkley was already on stage when Betsy and I arrived, running through their great cover of Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone." Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo were wearing tan jackets over a white uniform (Cee-Lo quickly removed his, due to the summer heat) and their band all had maroon-looking vests over their dress whites (the drummer gussied up his uniform with a bowtie). Other highlights were "Run," a set-closing "Smiley Faces," and even their ballad (which I'm not as into on record) "Who's Gonna Save My Soul." Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Sonic Youth, Social Distortion

Brendan Byrne Arena, E. Rutherford, NJ.... It was a couple years before Neil was bestowed the "Godfather of Grunge" moniker, but this tour made clear he had an affinity with noisy, scruffy bands of younger vintage. A great show all around. It was my first time seeing Neil, so I was pretty psyched. He had snapped out of his weird '80s era with a vengeance on 1989's Freedom and 1990's Ragged Glory albums. I was pretty blown away with how hard he rocked at the show. My most vivid memory of the concert was a giant microphone with a yellow ribbon on it getting a lot of applause (due to the Gulf War being still in progress at the time). The opening acts were pretty memorable as well. I was struck with how low-slung Mike Ness played his guitar. And during Sonic Youth's feedback-drenched finale, Thurston Moore used his guitar as a bridge between the front of the stage and a security barrier and he carefully shimmied across it, all the while spewing caterwauling nois...

Bjork, De La Soul, Lee Perry, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Michael Stipe & Mike Mills, Pavement, Blur, Taj Mahal & The Phantom Blues Band, Rancid, Beastie Boys, Alanis Morisette

Downing Stadium, Randall's Island, New York, NY..... The Tibetan Freedom Concert was obviously a pretty massive show, not just in the number of artists performing but in the largeness of most of the acts. The day I went (out of the two days of the festival) had a great lineup and was absolutely jam-packed with people. I tried not to go to the bathrooms or to get food (though I ended up doing both) because the area one had to walk to get to those facilities seemed like a dangerously overcrowded choke point.
