Brazilian Girls, Willie Nile, The Boogie Hustlers

Image
WYEP Community Broadcast Center, Pittsburgh, PA.... After a similar fundraiser last year while still constructing our building was successful, we decided to do it again. We blocked off the street in front of the WYEP Community Broadcast Center, set up a stage and put the Brazilian Girls and the Boogie Hustlers there, plus had a V.I.P. event inside with Willie Nile.   me with Willie Nile (Melissa Franko photo)

Rancid

Club Zoo, Pittsburgh, PA I hadn't seen Rancid since a late '90s Warped Tour or at least since the 1997 Tibetan Freedom Concert , and I'd never seen a full, headlining show by the band. Plus, I'd never been to the venue formerly known as Metropol, although I'd heard much about it (mostly negative), so it was going to be doubtless interesting. post continues.... Betsy, Ned, Steve, and I arrived to see the first (local) opener. Betsy and I were also interested in seeing if we'd get in with our "tickets"--Betsy came to the club to buy tickets and they gave her a copy of the club owner's business card, hand scrawled with "Rancid - admit one." This seemed a bit dodgy, so I emailed the guy who actually books the shows (an acquaintance) and he said it was okay. And, indeed, we got in with no problem. The bouncers didn't even bat an eye when they took our "tickets." We saw the first band, Weekend Warriors (enjoyable but forgettable),...

Me First & the Gimee Gimees

PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA.... A notorious show!  My alt-rock radio station in NJ, WHTG, used to play Me First & The Gimee Gimees on our punk and hardcore show, and their shtick was doing punk covers of well-know songs that were often tongue-in-cheek. When I heard that the Pittsburgh Pirates had booked the band to play after three games on 8/24, 8/25, and 8/26, I was very surprised. I had a hard time believing the Pirates had booked the band, and I found it odd that the band would be into such a gig. (Apparently, it was the money. Also, Me First singer Spike Slawson is originally from Pittsburgh, but I don't know how that fit into the booking, if at all.) It did not go well. When the band started playing songs that the crowd knew but were performing these songs in a style that the crowd didn't care for, the boo-birds started coming fast and furious. (The Pirates must have thought they were booking a standard cover band.) Suffice to say the other two performances were ca...

Thomas Dolby

Image
Club Cafe, Pittsburgh, PA.... I got to interview Dolby on WYEP prior to the show, and I asked him first about his work in interactive audio (and the fact that he made a ton of money licensing software to mobile phone companies during the ringtone era) and then about the fact that he once said that touring no longer made economic sense for him and he would likely never go on the road again. He replied that success in one led to the freedom to do the other, and so he was back on stages doing solo shows in which he was like a mad scientist of the synthesizers.  He wore a camera strapped to his head, feeding a screen behind him so you could see what he was doing from his POV. It was pretty fun, and great hearing these songs live after thinking that would never happened. Especially great to hear his Dolby's Cube song "Hyperactive." setlist: Leipzig One of Our Submarines I Live in a Suitcase Flying North The Flat Earth Budapest by Blimp Windpower Europa and the Pirate Twins Hyp...

Slim Forsythe & The Parklane Drifters

Image
Kopec's, Pittsburgh, PA.... After going to see the art on display at a former plant warehouse at 3618 Penn Avenue for Art All Night (and saying hello to Bumblebee Slim and Wrett Weatherspoon, who were broadcasting live on site for WYEP), I went with Betsy and Ned to see Slim Forsythe and his band do their old time country swing radio broadcast simulation thing. It was a very entertaining show. Kopecs Bar

Boy With a Fish

Image
Rongovian Embassy, Trumansburg, NY...... My then-girlfiend, now-wife and I were visiting Ithaca and were happy to see that Boy with a Fish was playing at the Rongo. The Rongo was a bar and music venue that everyone I knew went to while I was at Ithaca College in the 1980s--except me. I had never been to a show there, so I was glad to go to a locally legendary space that had some sporadic closures over the years. (It has since closed permanently.) Boy With a Fish was a side project by members of the band The Horseflies during a hiatus period for them. I had heard their 2004  Birds Fly Backwards  album and had played the song "Sometimes" a little on WYEP. We had a fun time at their show and I had a chance to chat a little with Jeff and Judy from the band. There was also a band called Hubcap on the bill, but I don't think we saw them.
