The Clarks

I was extremely late for the show. I was on the guest list, but they almost weren't going to let me in since they had already broken down the will call table. I had just recently moved to Pittsburgh and I was still getting used to the early concert start times which are the rule here (unlike the NY-NJ area, where the headliner rarely goes on before 11pm, even on weeknights).

My previous experiences seeing The Clarks were in small clubs in NJ, so I was shocked and amazed to see a sellout crowd in this amphitheater (which is actually just a parking lot with a permanent teflon tent-structure over it). Regional stars are a phenomenon we don't have enough of anymore--bands usually attain some level of national success or else they're stuck in local-band hell.

The Clarks sold out this place, something that the Foo Fighters didn't even do a little more than a week later. Cool!

South Side Works, Pittsburgh, PA.... New American Music Union festival The festival was two days long, featuring a lot more bands than listed above, but due to childcare these four were the only ones I was able to see. Of them Gnarls Barkley and Spoon were terrific. The Raconteurs and Bob Dylan not so much. Gnarls Barkley was already on stage when Betsy and I arrived, running through their great cover of Violent Femmes' "Gone Daddy Gone." Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo were wearing tan jackets over a white uniform (Cee-Lo quickly removed his, due to the summer heat) and their band all had maroon-looking vests over their dress whites (the drummer gussied up his uniform with a bowtie). Other highlights were "Run," a set-closing "Smiley Faces," and even their ballad (which I'm not as into on record) "Who's Gonna Save My Soul." Mellon Arena, Pittsburgh, PA..... The P.L.E.A.S.E. Benefit concert for Hurricane Katrina relief.   my credential from the show    "P.L.E.A.S.E." stood for "Pittsburgh Lends Emergency And Saving Efforts" and was an attempt to raise money for the American Red Cross following the devastation of the New Orleans area in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. (80% of the proceeds were going to the Red Cross while 20% was donated to efforts in Western PA to help people still recovering from Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Around $100,000 was raised.) Many of the region’s leading names in multiple music genres came together several weeks after the Louisiana flooding, bringing out around 8,000 people for this unique show. Not only was the crowd entertained by the musical acts, but current and former Steelers players made appearances, including Franco Harris, Louis Lipps, Andy Russell, Craig Bingham, and Jeff Reed.
