Splitsville/Evelyn Forever/Miracle Brah

Budapest Lounge, New Brunswick, NJ This was my birthday show that my friend Maryelizabeth put together for me. It was quite a treat. People kept buying me drinks. By the end of the night, I was smoking a cigar from somewhere. It was the first time I heard Evelyn Forever do their cover of "Born to Run." Splitsville was great, as always.

Creed/Our Lady Peace/Oleander

Convention Hall, Asbury Park, NJ Some shows are memorable, and others... Well, others are merely another ticket stub for the collection. Man, oh man--is Creed a lousy band! They are such corporate tools. Crowd-pleasing, yes, but then, so is N'Sync. I figured I'd check them out live before I completely dimissed them; after this night: dismissed! Our Lady Peace is a good band, at least, so the evening wasn't a complete waste (Oleander was pretty weak, as well). It's possible OLP came by the station for an interview before the show.

Moby

Bowery Ballroom, New York, NY.....   A very memorable concert. The HBO music series Reverb was taping the concert and their extra lights set off the venue fire alarms. At first, we all thought the strobe lights flashing around the stage were just part of the show, if not well synched to the beat. But then a guy walked on stage and pow-wowed with Moby and then announced that we had to clear the room and head outside. The fire department checked everything out and the audience was let back in after a bit of a wait on the sidewalk, but I'd swear the crowd was larger and that some of the people re-entering the venue had walked up during the fire-department intermission.  Oh, and the music was terrific. Songs performed included "Honey," "South Side," "Natural Blues, " "Bodyrock," "Go!," "Find My Baby," and "Feeling So Real." This show was about a half-dozen days after Moby had performed at Woodstock '99 (on the ...

Counting Crows

Tradewinds, Sea Bright, NJ.... Counting Crows booked this show as a warm up before they headed up to New York state for Woodstock 99. Prior to playing "St. Robinson in His Cadillac Dream," Adam Duritz said, "We got a new album coming out in October, and it's called  This Desert Life . And tonight we're going to play you songs from the first album, and the second album, and I guess the fourth album. This is a song you don't know, it's the last song on our new album." (It appears he was counting their 1998 live album in their sequence of albums; note that  This Desert Life  wasn't released until November 2nd.) setlist: "Mr. Jones," "Angels of the Silences," "St. Robinson in His Cadillac Dream," "Anna Begins," "Mercury," "Omaha," "Daylight Fading," "Speedway," "Round Here," "Hanginaround," "Rain King," "A Murder of One," "Hors...

Fountains of Wayne, Evelyn Forever, The Selzers

Brighton Bar, Long Branch, NJ..... Fountains of Wayne were scheduled to drop by WHTG for an interview and a live performance, but when they showed up, they had to beg off playing live. Lead singer Chris Collingwood was miserable with a cold, and had to preserve his voice for both the show the Brighton Bar show as well as the European tour they were just about to embark upon. After the interview, in the WHTG front office, it was increasingly clear that Chris was not going to be magically better for that evening's gig. No amount of soup or theraflu would change the fact that Chris wasn't going to be singing that night. So the band was discussing how they were going to approach the vocals and harmonies. After giving them directions to a drug store on the way to the venue, we bid them adieu. The show was, um, different. Adam Schlesigner was clearly not used to singing the parts he was doing. Mistakes were made. Apologies were offered. I found it a very interesting show, but I can i...
