Elvis Costello

Waterloo Village, Stanhope, NJ.....

After the intensity of the experience seeing Costello live in 1987, I wouldn't have missed this tour for the world. I gathered a small posse of college friends to go, all folks who would eventually rate their own Wikipedia and/or IMDB entries: Chris Regan, Danny Vermont, and Mike Royce.

It was Elvis' birthday, his 35th, and throughout the concert audience members shouted out birthday greetings. A couple folks even had homemade signs wishing him happy birthday. Elvis assiduously ignored all references to the milestone throughout the show--until his bandmates pranked him. Halfway through the set, Elvis launched into the next song on the setlist and suddenly realized that everyone else on stage was playing something different than he. Panic briefly took over his face until it dawned on him that the band was playing "Happy Birthday." Cake was produced as Elvis nodded sheepishly at the other musicians with a you-got-me look, as the crowd roared with approval. No longer able to pretend that it wasn't his birthday, he then thanked everyone in the audience for their well-wishes.

Allegheny Landing Park, Pittsburgh, PA....   The WYEP Summer Music Festival   In Brief: The only old song Shocked played was "Anchorage"--everything else was new. But unlike many performers who are heavy on their latest material, she was so dynamic that no one seemed to mind. Erin McKeown sat in on guitar for about 4 songs. There were some technical troubles during Penn's set, but he still played well. "Long Way Down" was interrupted halfway through ("I'd like to soldier on," Penn explained when he stopped the number, "But it's hard to sing if I can't hear the guitar"), but I'm so glad he played it. He closed with "Walter Reed," one of my favorites of the new record.

Fountains of Wayne, Evelyn Forever, The Selzers

Brighton Bar, Long Branch, NJ..... Fountains of Wayne were scheduled to drop by WHTG for an interview and a live performance, but when they showed up, they had to beg off playing live. Lead singer Chris Collingwood was miserable with a cold, and had to preserve his voice for both the show the Brighton Bar show as well as the European tour they were just about to embark upon. After the interview, in the WHTG front office, it was increasingly clear that Chris was not going to be magically better for that evening's gig. No amount of soup or theraflu would change the fact that Chris wasn't going to be singing that night. So the band was discussing how they were going to approach the vocals and harmonies.
