Paul McCartney

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY.... After seeing the concert the night before , I was grateful to have been offered a ticket to this night by my Ithaca-based Beatles friends Marge & Mario. It was very fascinating to see McCartney on two consecutive nights. (Something I've done only occasionally with a handful of bands I dig, like King Missile or the Avett Brothers.)  Everything was exactly the same, from the set list to the between-song comments I would have sworn were ad-libs the evening before. And it makes sense; Paul has always wanted to feel in control -- armchair psychologists, if not professional ones, would probably say the impulse goes back to insecurity after his mom died. Set list: Figure of Eight Jet Rough Ride Got to Get You Into My Life Band on the Run Ebony and Ivory We Got Married Maybe I'm Amazed The Long and Winding Road The Fool on the Hill Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Good Day Sunshine Can't Buy Me Love Put It There Hello, Go...

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY.... It was McCartney's first U.S. tour since the "Wings Over America" go-'round, and for all I knew it could be my last opportunity to see a Beatle perform live in concert. I simply had to go to this show! I was still working for the U.S. Postal Service in Whippany, NJ, when tickets went on sale, so I took the morning off and went to Scotti's Records in Millburn to buy my tickets. Although I was there before the appointed time when the tickets went on sale, others were there before me. I waited patiently in line, eager for my turn--I was going to buy the maximum number of tickets allowed (four) and sell the others to a few friends (at face value, of course).  Of course, it didn't work out that way. Just before I got up to the counter to buy tickets, the show sold out. I was angry and disappointed. I had to get tickets. So I went to a ticket broker. I bought a pair for $110 each, although that seemed absolutely outrage...

Rolling Stones/Living Colour

Shea Stadium, Flushing, NY This was one of the most spectacular concerts I've ever attended ("spectacular" being used in the "spectacle" sense). The massive stage, the huge industrial-themed set (on the top of which Mick Jagger dramatically appeared to sing "Sympathy for the Devil"), the gigantic inflatable women that emerged from the far ends of the set during "Honky Tonk Women"--it was quite a sight. set list:   Start Me Up Bitch Sad Sad Sad Undercover of the Night Harlem Shuffle Tumbling Dice Miss You Ruby Tuesday Play With Fire Dead Flowers Rock and a Hard Place Mixed Emotions Honky Tonk Women Midnight Rambler You Can't Always Get What You Want Can't Be Seen Happy Paint It Black 2000 Light Years From Home Sympathy for the Devil Gimme Shelter It's Only Rock 'n' Roll (But I Like It) Brown Sugar (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction (encore break) Jumpin' Jack Flash

Elvis Costello

Waterloo Village, Stanhope, NJ..... After the intensity of the experience seeing Costello live in 1987 , I wouldn't have missed this tour for the world. I gathered a small posse of college friends to go, all folks who would eventually rate their own Wikipedia and/or IMDB entries: Chris Regan , Danny Vermont , and Mike Royce . It was Elvis' birthday, his 35th, and throughout the concert audience members shouted out birthday greetings. A couple folks even had homemade signs wishing him happy birthday. Elvis assiduously ignored all references to the milestone throughout the show--until his bandmates pranked him. Halfway through the set, Elvis launched into the next song on the setlist and suddenly realized that everyone else on stage was playing something different than he. Panic briefly took over his face until it dawned on him that the band was playing "Happy Birthday." Cake was produced as Elvis nodded sheepishly at the other musicians with a you-got-me look, as t...

The Cure, Love & Rockets, The Pixies, Shelleyan Orphan

Giants Stadium, E. Rutherford, NJ..... I bought a pair of tickets to bring my girlfriend to this concert, but she broke up with me before the show. I ended up going alone. This was the best possible way to experience a concert by The Cure on the Disintegration tour. I found it amusing to see a big, multi-band concert (not only where there the main three bands, but Shelleyan Orphan also opened) on the 20th anniversary of the Woodstock festival. It was at this concert for the first (and probably last) time that I heard the expression "blooted" used for "vomited." The Cure set list : Plainsong Pictures of You Closedown Kyoto Song A Night Like This Just Like Heaven Lovesong Last Dance Fascination Street Charlotte Sometimes The Walk A Forest In Between Days The Same Deep Water as You Prayers for Rain Disintegration encore break Lullaby Close to Me Let's Go to Bed Why Can't I Be You? 2nd encore break Homesick Untitled Three Imag...

The Replacements

Cook College Gym, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ Although I later had several opportunities to meet Paul Westerberg, this night contained the entire direct interaction I've ever had with the man. I shouted out "Androgynous!" as a song request during the show, and Westerberg replied, "Naw, we'd need a piano for that one."
