"The Garden" field, Bethel, NY..... The show was billed as "A Day in the Garden," and while it took place at the site of the legendary Woodstock concert the day I went was all current alt-rock acts.  The event took place Friday, August 14th through this day (Sunday the 16th). On Friday, they had Ziggy Marley, Don Henley, Stevie Nicks, and Woodstock vets Ten Years After. On Saturday, they had Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell (who was advised by her manager not to play the 1969 festival to instead make an appearance on The Dick Cavett Show), Donovan, and Woodstock vets Pete Townshend, Melanie, and Richie Havens. I didn't go to those days, just Sunday. I was there with my girlfriend, and it was very interesting to see live music at what was formerly Max Yasgur's farm. We didn't stick around for much of Third Eye Blind, the day's final act. I had just seen them a few weeks before  and I was full up on my 3EB consumption. I think we missed part of Dishwalla (the d...

Tori Amos, The Devlins

Madison Square Garden, New York, NY We at WHTG had a number of contest winners (along with some other folks, including me) attend a soundcheck listening. It was very cool to be in a nearly empty Madison Square Garden and hear Tori play a couple of songs on her piano. While most of the attendees were rapt in attention to Tori, I mostly listened with my head tilted a bit sideways so I could hear the natural reverb of such a large space without people to absorb the sound. Tori was backed by a three-piece band (drummer Matt Chamberlain, guitarist Steve Caton, and bassist Jon Evans). In addition to her usual Bosendorfer, she also played an electric piano at times during her hour-and-a-half long set.. Setlist : "Precious Things," "Cruel," "Cornflake Girl," "Spark," "Iieee," "Sugar," "Leather," "Landslide," "Jackie's Strength," "Tear in Your Hand," "Raspberry Swirl," "Waitres...

Monster Magnet

Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ Here's an external review from the web: New Jersey's resident retro-psychedelic-metal-troglodyte-hot-rodding space-cadets Monster Magnet put in an impressive live set last weekend at this "home town" show. Visuals included rising sun back-drop projections, rapid-fire stills of newsreel war footage, strobe lights, and clouds of dry ice. The boys came out in fine, de-tuned, sludgy form, with frontman Dave Wyndorf repeatedly leaning into the wall of moshers in front of the stage. Ed Mundell put in some fantastic lead-work all night long, with his usual wah-wah drenched sound coming thru 2 full Marshall stacks. (He used a lovely black Les Paul in addition to his usual Strat... Dave also used an SG in addition to his usual battered old Strats.) Joe Calandra's bass-work was great, and was FELT as much as heard. Jon Kleiman drummed brilliantly, & managed to smoke entire cigarettes while drumming, a la Cheap Trick's Ben E. Carlos.... At...
